Not since 1924 has the iconic Chanel No.5 perfume bottle been tweaked, but this year, it’s getting a head-to-toe makeover in crimson! Like the scent itself, Chanel No.5 L’Eau Red Edition is a fresh take on a forever-classic.
The new Chanel No.5 L’Eau Red Edition officially debuted in London last month with Chanel ambassador Lily Rose Depp. The model-actress who has been the face of Chanel L’Eau since 2016, is tailor-made to front the spritz. She, after all, is full of paradoxes—like the scent itself, which is rooted in the legendary house of Chanel but which has been modernized to suit a new generation.
Depp spoke to fashion journal WWD about her French-American pedigree and her Gemini-with-Scorpio-rising character. “There are a lot of paradoxes in my personality,” she said.
For those who haven’t tried No.5 L’Eau, it’s a fresher, lighter take on original Chanel perfume. It’s a great, wearable scent, but of course this new “fiery cloak of red” makes it even more desirable.
Red was, after all, one of Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite colours. And it made an impact in her collections that were consistently chic statements in black, white, beige, white and gold. Red was her exclamation mark. It was sexy, seductive, rebellious—unapologetically bad-ass.
It was, say the Chanel records, “a color she explored in all its gradation, vibrancy and depth. Whether crimson, garnet or ruby, teamed with velvet, tweed or chiffon, for a suit or a cloak, red always made a monochrome statement in her fashion.
“Not in touches, but like a work of abstract art painted all over, like a fatal attraction that keeps the eye riveted.”
We’re reminded of the red-themed, red-carpet moments of Nicole Kidman and Gisele Bundchen and of the wonderful Luc Besson Little Red Riding Hood Chanel film, where red plays a starring role.
And so it continues with this limited-edition offering of No.5 L’Eau EDT and No.5 Eau de Parfum in a blood-red glass flacon.
For die-hard Chanel collectors who are seeing red, there is also the opportunity to purchase one of 55 numbered, 900 mL, Baccarat crystal bottles of No.5 Parfum in the gorgeous hue. Now that’s a stocking stuffer on a whole other designer level.
