Deborah’s editor picks for November

Deborah’s editor picks for November

By Deborah Fulsang

Sniffing out the new and newsworthy this month, here a trio of my favourite things for November:

1. Love for Le Labo
Rose 31, Iris 39, Neroli 36, Santal 33. Indie perfume brand Le Labo with its mix-and-decant-on-demand scent portfolio is now the property of Estée Lauder, the behemoth that houses prestige brands such as Tom Ford, Jo Malone, Bobbi Brown, MAC et alia under its beauty umbrella. With the house that Estée built behind it, we’re thinking that the olfactory-obsessed might soon have more spritzes, and an extended array of other scented Le Labo products available to them. We can’t wait.

2. Narciso’s New Spritz
Narciso Rodriguez’s new Eau de Parfum is the scent equivalent of one of the American designer’s svelte sleeveless sheaths. It is modern, yet undeniably chic and feminine. It is bold but infinitely wearable. It is timeless and classic but young too. That’s no small achievement. This is one pretty and sexy scent full of the musk that we associate with Rodriguez, plus a luminous aura of white blooms against warm woods. A beautiful gift to pick up now and slip into a stocking next month. Perfect for one of my November editor picks. Narciso Eau de Parfum, $106 (50 ml),

3. The Power of Patchouli
Patchouli: Love it for its reported anti-depressant, antiseptic or aphrodisiac properties; its free-love counter-culture associations; and its iconic sultry and earthy (even marijuana-like) scent. For so many reasons, love it. Patchouli is being newly presented in so many fragrances and in such new ways (stay tuned her for more stories and specifics here at The Whale & The Rose), that we award it our ingredient of the month.

Deborah Fulsang has spent the last two decades as a journalist covering news and trends in the worlds of style—in fashion and beauty, design and décor, food and entertaining. Her long-held love of fragrance led her to launch The Whale & The Rose, a destination for all things perfume-related. Now, when she indulges in a crazy-expensive bottle of fragrance, she can do so guilt-free. Well almost. It’s all in the name of research after all.
