Derek Lam 10 Crosby: fragrance with film

Derek Lam 10 Crosby: fragrance with film

New York City’s multifaceted Crosby street inspires American designer Derek Lam’s new perfume collection.

We love a good perfume partnership. So when we found out that there would be short films released in sync with the Derek Lam 10 Crosby collection—with creative direction by Supermarche/Moxie Pictures Production—we were psyched. The shorts feature recurring characters intermingling with each other in the NYC setting.

Each film stands alone, but like each spritz in Lam’s 10-scent fragrance lineup, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Each is a different facet of the same story. A different impression of the same space.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby perfume collection

The new Derek Lam 10 Crosby: a collection of 10 scents inspired by that New York City street launches with short films to match each fragrance.

The collection in Lam’s own words (as reported in “What it is basically are fragrance interpretations of my feelings about New York.

“My feelings about the women that I see, especially on Crosby Street—kind of imagining her moments, her life, her occasions. Not just how she looks, but emotional occasions, funny situations, romantic [episodes]—kind of linked together…They are related through my lens; literally, me looking out the window.”

Below, find all the films along with our thoughts of each scent.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Ellipses

A story about an awkward first date turned sweet, is the premise of this film and though you might be thinking spice with all that Peking duck on display, the scent to match is sandalwood and jasmine—warm and subtle.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby 2am Kiss

2am Kiss does in fact end in a kiss—but not the one you’re probably hoping for. The scent is more about the 2am part. The nightlife, the music, that bold red lip to match the bottle. Sweet crystallized amber mingles with salty wood for a fun after-hours scent that works whether you’ve got a partner or are dancing on your own.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Silent St.

A film about a hotel doorman who takes his tips and rents out a room begins a little manic and definitely quirky. It takes a more serious turn though and leaves you with a softness that is captured in a scent of white musk.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Rain Day

A title like Rain Day conjures images of wet fields, cozy interiors and whimsically designed umbrellas. This is a rain day of a different sort. Taking place in a cab, this rain day is about an unlikely meeting, parallel love lives and the ability to relate to a stranger. The scent? It’s green and fresh with neroli and vetiver—a rain day spent in the city, surrounded by people and wet pavement.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Hi-Fi

The film for Hi-Fi offers an unexpected (and musical) take on Tinder-style dating—a love story for the modern and highly cellular (as in phone) age. Notes of pink peony and narcisse create a bright, floral fragrance.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Drunk on Youth

Drunk on Youth is another of the 10 Crosby films that turns the premise on its head. Instead of collegiate inebriation, think of rose-coloured glasses perfectly presented as a rose-coloured eau with notes of fresh youthful honeysuckle and crisp apple.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Blackout

In this case the title is quite literal—a blackout. One where the lights can only be turned on by telling the truth. The perfect backdrop for a little truth or dare, no? The scent is osmanthus and chai tea—spicy, earthy, mysterious.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Looking Glass

Looking Glass takes solo dance party to a whole new level, albeit with a bit of melancholy. Set to the classic tune I’m Nobody’s Baby Now by Reparata & The Delrones, the ecstatic but beautiful dance is complemented by the amber-tinged eau. Chinese magnolia coupled with tonka bean offers skin-like sensuality: A soft but bold chord is struck.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Afloat

Notes of white mimosa and orris seem well-suited to the sunset that ends this film. This is a film of transitions—the subway, the time of day, the city and the sea. Perhaps the title, Afloat, refers to the salty sea air on the breeze. Certainly the fragrance has a touch of it.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Something Wild

A short, but sweet end to the collection: Notes of cedarwood and vanilla add a gourmand touch to punctuate this scent’s expression. A delicious dessert.
