Perfume and lipstick: Spritzes and kisses

Perfume and lipstick: Spritzes and kisses

When it comes to love, so much is communicated without a single word. Make your unspoken messages speak volumes this Valentine’s month with inspired perfume and lip colour choices.

We would argue that there’s nothing like perfume or a killer lipstick to make a woman feel her sexiest, most confident, best. Not the hottest heels, not even a curve-hugging dress. Those latter essentials come third and fourth on that very important list.

We do, however, recognize that sexy comes in many shapes and forms, colours and scents. There is look-at-me-now sexy, which demands a high-voltage candy-apple red lip colour and a bold opinionated perfume, but there is also a softer, sultrier flip side to that beauty coin—plus many looks in-between.

We’ve pinpointed four “spritzes and kisses”, perfume and lipstick approaches inspired by classic looks, but also by the recent runways. Then we set off on a beauty-research trip to our neighbourhood Beauty Boutique at Shoppers Drug Mart to inspire your Valentine’s Day primping and perfuming.

Your Beauty Look: Racy Red

A woman wearing gorgeous red lipstick—and owning it—oozes confidence. If you love that look, you’re in good company. A bold red lip was the statement du jour on the spring runway at DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Celine and Jason Wu. Even better: All manner of red made the style cut, from creamy to matte to high-gloss lacquer, so there’s plenty of choice for your personal scarlet statement.

The perfect perfume to wear with that kick-ass crimson shade? Why something equally bold and…kissable.

We think the new Diesel Loverdose Redkiss spritz hits just the right fragrance notes: fruity and floral but with a rich-amber, edible-hazelnutty undercurrent.

Diesel Loverdose Redkiss EDP, $65 (50 ml) Exclusive to Shoppers Drug Mart; Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Red Door Red, $32; and Bourjois Rouge Edition Aqua Laque in Red My Lips #5, $24. All Shoppers Drug Mart.

Your Beauty Look: Vamp Chic

Credit the house of Chanel and its break-the-mould red-black “Vamp” nail polish of 1994 for paving the way for our ongoing love of deep dark beauty statements. Today, super-dark reds—some tinted slightly earthy, others more indigo-violet—retain their trendsetting edge. Just look at those sexy, vampy pouts on this season’s catwalks at Emporio Armani, where lips were an earthy-ruby shade; at Givenchy where it was brown-meets-berry; and at Burberry, where models wore an intense browny-merlot hued lip colour.

And to suit that edge?

Something nocturnal-leaning in the way of perfume, of course! YSL Black Opium provides the apropos mystique: Rich vanilla swirls with a coffee accord, then plays with fresh white flowers in combination with sultry patchouli. Street chic and irresistible!

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium EDP, $95 (50 ml); and Pur Lip Lure Hydrating Lip Laquer in Mystic, $26, both Shoppers Drug Mart.

Your Beauty Look: Fresh-Faced

Love the sex appeal of all things nude—from a contoured face in a dozen shades of beige and tan, to barely there nail polishes? We get it: healthy, glowing, gorgeous; that’s the spirit.

On Spring runways, advocates of subtle-sexy lip colour were many: from Alberta Ferretti to Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors to Rodarte and Lanvin. Think natural but with the slightest blush of pink.

Granted, a fresh look calls for a fresh fragrance. With its vibrant citrus notes, bouquet of flower petals and sparkling greenness, we’re imagining Clinique Happy as the logical perfume to complete this modern, easy-going beauty approach.

Clinique Happy EDP, $81 (100 ml); Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Baci, $31; and Stila Aqua Lips Water Plumping Primer, $27; all Shoppers Drug Mart.

Your Look: Wine, wow!

You love red wine, right? That works for a great Valentine’s Day celebration too of course, and for great date makeup. With drama.

Wine, plum, deep dark berry: This was the mood—and the shades were often matte—on the Spring runway lips at Cushnie et Ochs and Miu Miu.

To suit the femme fatale beauty look, we’re advocating a super-femme scent, such as Donna Karan Liquid Cashmere White. It’s a modern floral with a voluptuous osmanthus heart and a warm musk and vanilla base.

Donna Karan Liquid Cashmere White EDP, $102 (50 ml); Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Fig, $23; and Smashbox Insta-Matt Lipstick Transformer, $26; all Shoppers Drug Mart.

Her long-held love of fragrance led her to launch The Whale & The Rose, a destination for all things perfume-related. Now, when she indulges in a crazy-expensive bottle of fragrance, she can do so guilt-free. Well almost. It’s all in the name of research after all.
