Runway trends, ready-to-wear perfumes

Fragrance shopping? Look to fall’s international catwalks for your style and scent-minded cues.

Whether you’re leaning to jet-black guipure lace dresses or tri-coloured striped trousers, there’s a fragrance perfectly in sync with your tastes and the top runway trends of the season. How to choose? ID your perfume persona, be it the Sultry Siren, Vivacious A-Type or Fabulous Flirt, and start there. Then, all it will take is a finely targeted spritz to complete your multi-sensorial style statement.

Our shopping destination: Shoppers Drug Mart. We checked out the perfume counter that’s part of the store’s Shake Up Your Makeup promotion and found a great lineup of new and on-trend toilettes that set the right catwalk-inspired tone.

RUNWAY TREND: Sultry Siren

¡Ay caramba! This season, runways are red-hot with Latin-influenced flair, showcasing everything from Salsa-esque ruffles at Celine and Alexander McQueen to black tassels at Valentino and Tom Ford. And as the fashion-temperature rises, so does our need to spritz on a little of this sultry sass. How does it come to life in perfumery?

Tap into the sultry mood with scents from the Oriental and Gourmand fragrance families. Follow your nose and sniff out perfumes with heady, sensual notes like vanilla, tonka bean, coffee, pink pepper, cedar and patchouli.

Where you’ll find them? Perfumes like Gucci Guilty swirl together notes of fruit and flowers (mandarin and peach, lilac and geranium) with pink pepper and velvety amber and patchouli; while Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium adds a delicious coffee note to its recipe of fruit and flowers. Not to mention patchouli, cedar and vanilla. So deep, dark and delicious.
Add a dash of muy caliente red lipstick, inspired by the models at Dolce and Gabbana, to complete your sultry style statement.

RUNWAY TREND: Vivacious A-Type

Designer labels such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Balmain, Bottega Veneta and Versace flooded the fall catwalks with bold geometric prints and rainbow-bright colours, leaving no doubt that creating maximum impact is this season’s name of the game.

Think A-type personality dressing designed to be noticed. Given this confident approach to prints and palette, wearing an equally effervescent perfume is a must. The scents that suit? Look for bright fruity-floral or aromatic spritzes laced with sweet and lively essences such as sparkling mandarin, confident flower notes, sunny solar accords and glowing base notes. Case in point: One Direction Between Us. It makes a cheeky complement to this vivacious runway POV. A swipe or two of black eyeliner punctuates this statement-making disposition brilliantly.

RUNWAY TREND: The Fabulous Flirt

With romance being the culmination of well-timed flirtation, it only makes sense that designers enamoured with the latter also expressed the former in their Fall 2015 collections. From Givenchy’s all-black tunics and Alberta Ferretti’s floor-sweeping white lace frocks to Oscar de la Renta and Simone Rocha’s richly hued and embellished gowns, love was definitely in the air on the international fashion runways for the fall-winter season. But it was a modern love with a fierce femininity at play.

Reinforcing this vibe, we see floral perfumes as ideal, but florals with a certain je ne sais quoi. Look for perfumes spiked with the unexpected: fruit, flowers and musk combined with coconut, cassis, marshmallow and sandalwood. They’ll keep these lace looks young and fresh, as good with biker boots as stilettos. Try Diesel Loverdose Tattoo, Arianne Grande Ari or the latest from Nicki Minaj Pink Print to express this trend. Then layer on a light pink lipstick as the final cool but coy flourish.
